Year 9

Science - Biology

This term, our Year 9 students have been getting hands-on in Science, exploring the wonders of the human body.

In a lesson that was not for the faint-hearted, students observed a sheep pluck dissection, examining how the trachea, lungs, heart, and liver work together. Students were especially excited to see the tongue still attached.

Another practical that was completed by Year 9 students was called "Homer-ostasis".

Students were tasked with being Homer Simpson's medical team and were responsible for keeping his fluid levels, temperature, and nutrition (through colour) at a set point.

This activity demonstrated to students the concept of homeostasis, the body's way of staying balanced, through create problem-solving and team work.

SOUP CHALLENGE

This term, students in the Year 9 Foods class were tasked with researching and re-creating a soup. With a range of ingredients to choose from, students created soups that ranged from pumpkin and potato and leek to chicken noodle and minestrone.

Congratulations to Lucas B, Joey G, and Kale N, whose ‘stroup’ (a mix between a soup and a stew) impressed the judges with its flavour and creativity. Their teamwork helped them stand out in the class.

Can you believe everything you read and hear in the media?

Year 9 English has launched into a new unit exploring Media Literacy. Students will be learning how to identify bias, evaluate credibility, and think critically about the messages they encounter every day in news, social media, and advertising. This important skill set will help them become thoughtful consumers — and creators — of media.

Excursion–Hollybank Treetop Adventures

On Tuesday, 16th September (Week 9), our Year 9 students will be heading to Hollybank Treetop Adventures as part of our inclusive challenges program this term. This excursion is a highlight for our Year 9s, providing opportunities to challenge themselves, work as a team, and step outside their comfort zones.

While some activities may feel challenging, attendance is expected to be the same as on any school day. Students will also participate in a range of fun and engaging team-based activities throughout the day.

Please ensure that all permission forms are returned as soon as possible to allow for smooth planning.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher or a member of the Year 9 team.

Art

Block 1 Year 9 Art on Wednesday mornings has been busy trialling grid drawing for their first project of the Term. Students were asked to select a character or image they like and use grid drawing techniques to enlarge and redraw their image. This process challenged students to use measurement and spatial awareness to draw from observation. We have had some great results and a different way to practise and develop our drawing techniques!
