Presentation Assembly
Our presentation assembly allowed us to share outstanding achievement across the school from grade 7-12. We were again overwhelmed by the support at our assembly with nearly 200 community members present on the day. I would like to thank Mr Franks, Mr Murray, Mrs Hawkes, Mrs Mihal and Mrs Pearce for ensuring the assembly ran smoothly.
Included in the newsletter are our award recipients for this year. Congratulations on your outstanding achievement. I know that your family and friends would be very proud.
Grade 10 Students
It is with mixed emotions that we farewell our Grade 10 students at their final assembly next Wednesday. This group of students have had some amazing achievements across the year. They have been great role-models in their leadership roles and have helped create a safe and supportive environment.
Schools play an important role in shaping who we are, or who we will become. If 2021 is anything to go by, these students are leaving RHS ready for the next stage of their life. I am sure the people they have met and the experience they have gained will be etched in their memories forever. We hope they make the most of their opportunities post Grade 10 and find their place to shine. We wish them and their families the best for the future.
2022 Prefects
During the second half of this year our Grade 9s have been working through a leadership process to nominate for Prefect in 2022. These students stepped out of their comfort zone and put themselves through an application, speech and voting process. I would like to thank all students for embracing this opportunity and giving it their “Best Effort”. Below are the elected prefects for 2022.
They will be formally inducted into their roles at an assembly early next year.

Transition Day
We had our transition day Tuesday 30th November with the majority of Grade 10s spending the day at Don College. Our grade 7, 8 and 9 students spent the day with their teachers for 2022.
We also welcomed our new Grade 7 students and are pleased to announce that we will have 6 classes next year. It was great to meet so many new students and to see them getting along so well. One of our values is “Best Effort”. They demonstrated this value by giving their best in all activities throughout the day. If your child is nervous about attending high school, please reassure them that there is a number of supports in place at Reece that will help to ensure a smooth transition. Please encourage your child to talk to us if they have any questions or concerns.

Farewells
At this stage we will have the biggest change in staffing since I have been at RHS.
After 16 years at RHS, Miss Knight has won an AST position at Kingston High School in Hobart. She is moving to Hobart to be closer to her partner who won the senior physio position with the Tasmanian JackJumpers Basketball team. Miss Knight has been an amazing leader in her time at RHS. She will be extremely hard to replace.
Mr Singline has won a permanent Food/Hospitality position at Latrobe High School. He has been teaching at RHS for 16 years and is ready for a new adventure. Mr Singline has built an amazing program at RHS and will also be difficult to replace. We wish him the best at Latrobe High. The staff and students will miss him greatly.
Mr Davies has been successful in winning the Director of Teaching and Learning role at Devonport Christian School for 2022 and beyond. This is a great opportunity for Mr Davies and we wish him well in his new role at DCS.
After 25 years of working with the DOE, predominantly in the RHS MDT department, Mr O'Halloran has decided to retire. He received his 25-year service award last week and will continue to stay connected to Reece High School by helping us out as a relief teacher when needed. We wish you the best in your retirement Mr O.
Mrs Chaplin is taking a year’s LWOP to support her husband on the farm while they build their new house. Mrs Chaplin is an outstanding science teacher, and we will miss her experience and passion for this area of the curriculum. We wish her a great break and hope she returns to us in 2023.
Mrs Milbourne has been a great TA for the past 6 years. She has worked predominantly in Grade 7 or with students in our Support Hub. Mrs Milbourne has decided to retire and focus on spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren.
Miss Dolbel has been successful in gaining a soccer scholarship at Northeast College in Nebraska, USA. Miss Dolbel has been our HPE trainee this year and we are all sorry to see her go, however, we know that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. She is an amazing athlete and could also have been playing for Carlton in AFLW. We wish Miss Dolbel all the best.
Mrs Landon replaced Mrs Cooper this term while she went on maternity leave. Mrs Landon has gained a position at another local high school for 2022.
2022 New Staff
We now have the following staff joining our RHS team next year.
Josephine Emery – Grade 7 AST and Grade 7 English
Kellie Gossage – Hospitality and Foods Teacher
Lucy Withers – Gr 10 Maths and Science Teacher
Isabelle Russo – Grade 8 English Teacher
Erica Dalle-Nogare – Grade 9 Science
Faye Squire – Support TA
Jessie Durose – Support TA
School Association
We held our last School Association Meeting for the year on Monday 22nd November. I would like to thank all our representatives for their support this year. We took the time to celebrate our current data and were able to reflect on all the exciting work that has happened inside and outside of our classrooms. If you are interested in becoming a member next year, please take note of information via FB and our newsletter in early 2022. You can also talk to Mrs Benson in our front office if you require any more information about the role of our school association.
Uniform Items
If you have any uniform items that you no longer need, especially Grade 10 students, all donations will be greatly accepted. Although we don’t run a second-hand shop we do have some families that do appreciate the support of being able to access second hand uniforms.

The data and evidence is outlined in our 2021 Annual Review. This has been presented to our School Association Representatives.
Interhigh Athletics Carnival
Last week we had our biggest representation at our Interhigh Athletics Carnival. It was great to see students from across the North West Coast giving their best for their school. I would like to thank Mr Wilson for organising the students. A lot of people took part in multiple events and would definitely have slept well on Wednesday night. We can rightfully be proud of the efforts from our students.
Congratulations Molly
Molly has again made the U/15 Tasmanian Hockey Team. Her relentless approach to training and willingness to give her best has continued to see her growth in the sport. She will travel to Newcastle in April next year.
Congratulations Jackson
This week we were informed that Jackson has been successful in landing a lead role in Devonport Choral Society’s next show “Freaky Friday”. He has the talent and commitment to achieve very well in the performing Arts. All the best Jackson.
Best Wishes
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support this year. We are fortunate enough to have families that are so supportive of our school.
I wish everyone a safe and restful summer break and hope you all get to spend some valuable time with your family over Christmas.

Community Connections provides an opportunity for students to give back to our local community. Grade 7 students were given the option to choose one of the following activities: Clean Out Crew (sorting out and removing unwanted furniture from below our classrooms); Pavement Posse (creating positive pictures and writing motivational sayings on the footpath outside of the school); Grass Grubs (putting down top soil and reseeding areas around the school); Car Wash Club (washing and cleaning staff members cars); and Book Club (reading a book to Prep students from Miandetta Primary). It was a fun filled Friday with students giving their best effort as they gave back to our local school community.
English
What do you prefer? A novel or a film based on the novel? Are there films you have watched that have changed the novel that you have liked? These are the hard questions that we have discussed in our new English unit ‘From the Director’s Chair’. The students from Grade 7 will compare and contrast the novel ‘Caroline’ by Neil Gaiman and the film. Which will they prefer?
HASS
In HASS, the Grade 7s looked at The Art of War written by Sun Tzu. This classic military strategy book is based on Chinese warfare and military thought. Many people around the world have adapted these teachings for use in politics, business, sport and in everyday life. The following quote is a favourite of 7C, “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.” – Sun Tzu
Maths
In Maths we have been exploring chance and probability events. Students this week have been exploring their chances of being victors in a number of games.
On behalf of the Grade 7 Team, we would like to thank students on a fantastic year. We have been very impressed with the way in which students have been working in all of their subjects to extend themselves and improve their overall standard. We hope that students and families have a restful and safe holiday. See you all in 2022.
Big Day Out
Last Thursday Grade 8s had their Term 4 Big Day Out. The day consisted of Grade 8 students travelling to Launceston and opting into either Airtime 360, roller-skating or a walk at the Gorge. Launceston turned on the summer weather for us with temperatures reaching 28 degrees! Students enjoyed challenging themselves at Airtime 360 with dodgeball, dunking the basketball hoop and using the trampolines to execute a range of different tricks. At roller-skating students spent their session gaining confidence including rolling under an object and over ramps. At the Gorge, students completed a walk and spent the time relaxing in a picturesque setting.
As a Grade 8 team it was a pleasure to celebrate the hard work and outstanding year in which our Grade 8 students have had this year on our Big Day Out.
Danika Hess
Grade 8 Team Leader
Term 4 has seen Grade 9 students involved in a variety of investigation activities, designed to extend mathematical and scientific reasoning. These approaches can challenge students to apply logic to find a reasonable possibility or explanation, without complete certainty.
In Maths, the investigations centred around probability. The first focused on sampling, making predictions and refining predictions as tests were repeated, and sample sizes were expanded. This reflected the catch-and release system, often used by ecologists, as well as scientific research into diagnosing and treating disease. The second investigation used dice and coins to model doping and drug testing percentages in sport, leading to an understanding of levels of accuracy in this field.
In Science, students have researched a particular ecosystem and an endangered species, presenting a factually persuasive speech to bring about action, and be crowned “Conservation Master”. Our final unit is looking at chemistry and heat transfer. On a particularly warm afternoon in Week 8, students were able to look at how salt added to ice emulsifies and decreases the temperature enough to make ice cream out of milk/cream without the need for a freezer.
What a great way to draw our fantastic year to its conclusion – developing thinking, reasoning young adults!
In Grade 9 Biology this week we have dissected salmon, which were donated by the staff at Petuna Seafoods. In this dissection we looked at internal and external features of the fish. We learnt that fish use their lateral line to swim in schools and hunt for prey. Fish have a special organ called a swim bladder that allows them to float.
Here are some photos from our dissection.
It has been another big couple of weeks for Grade 10 students. In Week 8, students sat exams for English, Maths, Science and HASS. It was wonderful to see students giving their best effort to their learning and making the most of this opportunity.
In English this week, students have been working on writing a speech titled ‘My Last Word’. As part of this, students are asked to share their memories of high school, express their gratitude towards their peers and teachers, and bid farewell to four years at Reece High School. Students will be presenting their speeches to their classmates later this week.
Below is some information regarding the final week:
Monday 13th – Normal school day.
Students will be given the opportunity to practise the Snowball Waltz which they will be doing at the Celebration Dinner. Students may choose to bring along their shoes.
Tuesday 14th – Launceston Trip
Students and teachers will be travelling to Launceston. Students will have the opportunity to do some Christmas shopping and purchase their lunch. It is essential that students bring their permission slips back prior to this day.
Wednesday 15th – Grade 10 Assembly and Celebration Dinner
The final assembly for Grade 10s will start at 9:30am. Families are asked to please RSVP at the school office if they are planning on attending. Students can leave at the conclusion of the assembly.
Students who are attending the Celebration Dinner should plan to arrive between 6-6:30pm. They will then enter the hall for the dinner. The dinner will end at 9pm. Please ensure that your child is collected from the school at this time. Professional photos can be accessed via TEAMs - Gr10 Homegroup after lunch the following day. Additional information about the dinner can be found in the letter given to students last week.
Thursday 16th– Last Day
Students will support teachers with the pack up of the Celebration Dinner and general tidy up of the Grade 10 area.
On behalf of the Grade 10 teaching team, we would like to thank you for your support this year. We wish you all a Merry Christmas and a restful break.
Sarah Elliott
Grade 10 Team Leader
We have had such a great time this year and would like to thank everyone for their support and involvement. Some of our highlights have been:
- Grade 7 camp bonding time
- Lunch time activities and inclusiveness (cupcake decorating was the highlight)
- Watching the board grow closer together
- Dodgeball against Devonport High, even if we lost
- Mr Frank’s circle questions at the start of lessons
- Hiding from other prefects
- Guessing game with Mrs Rataj when she was away
- Individual projects - especially involving the glimmer man.
- Tim Blair Fair and making lemonade.
We’re excited to finish an awesome year with our Reece in Review Assembly on Monday.
Grade 9 & 10 Outdoor Education
As we sit here at Lake Barrington on Grade 9 OE camp attempting to write a newsletter article we are filled with so many smiling and happy memories from the past year.
Grade 10 students finished the year by planning and undertaking 3 very different camps. Tas Peninsula, Ansons Bay/Coles Bay and Bicheno/Coles Bay – well done to these students and the effort they went to when learning to plan and undertake a camp. The effort you put in is often the reward you get out.
Grade 9 students are currently on their water themed camp with canoeing, kayaking, waterskiing, fishing, swimming and the Forth Falls walk. Thank you to those who were up for an extra challenge and who came on the walk with 3 incredible staff.
We have had such a great year with Miss Dolbel; enjoy your next adventure and we’ll see you when you get back (because we know you will be).
Mersey Community Hospital Art Display
Our Mersey Community Hospital Art Display has been recently changed over. Special thanks to Mr Beechey for helping Miss Lutwyche transport and hang the frames.
Well done to the following students whose artwork has been selected:
Kaycee (Gr9), Keira (Gr8), Ella (Gr10), Leah (Gr8), Stasi (Gr8), Zane (Gr7), Sarah-Jane (Gr7) and a selection of lino prints from Brylie (Gr10), Emilia (Gr10), Abigail (Gr8), Jayde (Gr8), Isabella (Gr8) and Annabel (Gr8).
Meg Lutwyche
Art Teacher
This year Art students have been busy experimenting with a range of materials to create outstanding art pieces. Celebrating student’s artistic talent is important at Reece and there have been a lot of opportunities to showcase student’s work throughout the year.
In Term 1 Grade 8 Art and Grade 9 Street Art students participated in creating exquisite corpses for the Tidal Beast Paste-Up Wall which is located in the alley way next to the Devonport Theatre.
In Term 2 a range of Art students created mixed media bookmarks for the Devonport Library and student artworks were on display for our annual Realising Potential Night showcasing artworks from Term 1 & Term 2.
In Term 3 2 block art students created artworks for a youth exhibition that will be held next year called 'This Is Us' exploring the topic of emotion.
This term I have framed artworks to go to the Mersey Community Hospital and updated the frames around the school. We have also recently had an Art Exhibition showcasing work from Term 3 & 4.
It’s been a fantastic year in Art and students should be proud of the work they have created.
Meg Lutwyche
Visual Art Teacher
On Tuesday Night we celebrated the outstanding talents of our Music and Visual Art students with an Art Exhibition and Music Performance Night.
Thanks to Elliot who did a great job hosting the night and all those who came along to support our talent students.
Meg Lutwyche

Hockey Tasmania Festival - Indoor Hockey
On the weekend, students from Reece High School participated in the Hockey Tasmania Festival of Indoor Hockey representing the NW Coast.
Charlie and Hayden played in the under 15s who drew in the final 4-4 with a very strong North team. Stirling, Molly and Heath played in the under 13 team that defeated South Blue 8-4 to claim the state indoor title. All five were brilliant over the weekend scoring and saving goals.
