We have had a great start to the beginning of Term 2 with students excited to access extra-curricular activities such as the State Mountain Bike Challenge and the Northwest Futsal Competition. We are hoping that more opportunities will present themselves as the term progresses. Our focus value for Term 2 is “Inclusiveness”.
As RHS students we.. | As RHS staff we... | As RHS parents we.. | |
INCLUSIVENESS Treating all people fairly, equitably and with empathy |

I strongly believe that our relentless focus on our school values has helped to shape our positive school culture. Not only do they hold us accountable, but they also support us in developing great personal qualities. Our student leadership teams will focus on this value throughout the term and our end of term awards will also be tailored to this value.
School Uniform
During the last 6 months, our parent and student reps on the School Association have advocated for a Reece High School Beanie. This has hit the design phase and we are seeking feedback from our community and student leadership groups. Please email grant.armitstead@education.tas.gov.au if you have any thoughts on the design of the beanie. The cost will be $20 per beanie and it can only be worn outdoors.
Anzac Day
Anzac Day is one of Australia’s most important national occasions. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. Australians recognise the 25th April as a day of national remembrance, attending services all around the country. Anzac Day is a special time where we reflect on the many different meanings of war. I would like to thank our prefects for representing RHS at the Devonport service. They were all fantastic role models, and we appreciate them giving up part of their holiday to lay a wreath on behalf of the school.
Term 1 Celebration
At the end of Term 1 we held grade assemblies to recognise those students who received Responsibility and Realising Potential Awards for each grade. Due to a student being absent, we presented our “Hub” awards on Thursday in week one of Term 2. We couldn’t speak more highly of the efforts from our students and therefore the students who received the awards can be rightly proud of their achievements.
A big congratulations to Mac for receiving the Responsibility Award and Xavier for receiving the Realising Potential Award.

I would like to emphasise the importance of school attendance on these days. As with all learning that takes place at RHS, we expect students to give their Best Effort. This is especially important when we find things difficult or challenging. We understand that NAPLAN doesn’t highlight all aspects of a learner, however, it does give us a snapshot of what students currently understand in relation to literacy and numeracy and enables us to focus on areas of our instruction that can be improved. You can help your child by making them comfortable about the nature and purpose of the testing and assure them that the tests will give them an opportunity to demonstrate what they have learnt in class.
If you would like to know more information about the tests, please visit the NAPLAN website http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/naplan.html
Overnight Excursions, Camps and Interstate Trips
We were informed by Tas Health at the beginning of term that overnight excursions, camps and interstate trips wouldn’t be supported in Term 2, unless it was an essential part of the Year 11/12 curriculum. Therefore, we have had to cancel the Ski Trip for 2022 and will look at hopefully introducing Outdoor Education camps for Grade 9 and 10 students in Terms 3 and 4.
In Year 7, we were able to end Term 1 on a positive note, with an awards assembly and Prefect connection activity afternoon. The Year 7 Teaching and Learning Team would like to commend Year 7 students for the way they have adapted to high school life and to encourage them to continue acting out our school values of Best Effort, Inclusiveness, Respect and Responsibility as we move through Term 2.
This week our RP classes have been hard at work applying their learning to specific activities and creative tasks. Students have been writing and acting out scripts in Drama, building puzzles in MDT and creating beautiful artworks in Art. Check out some of the amazing work below.
In English students are working on the culminating task for our unit ‘Constructing Reality’. The unit aims to increase awareness of audience manipulation as a result of the way in which Reality TV is heavily constructed. Awareness of constructs and improving our capacity to be critical of what we watch and read is a skill addressed within the Australian Curriculum. To increase student capacity in writing about this topic they spent some time focusing on subject specific vocabulary, with a variety of activities.
Grade 9 English/HASS report
Grade 9 students have made an excellent start to Term 2, settling back into our school routines and demonstrating a readiness for learning. The Grade 9 teaching team are looking forward to students making the most of the opportunities provided throughout the school and putting in their best effort across all areas.
In English, students are exploring the concepts of socio-economic status and personal journey as represented in the novel By the River by Australian author Steven Herrick. Students are currently working on writing their own creative texts in the style of Herrick’s writing, focusing on key moments or memories in their lives.
In HASS, students are demonstrating their understanding of the Industrial Revolution, a period of time which saw many societal changes and laid the foundations of the modern world. In preparation for an in-class writing assessment, students are conducting their own research and consolidating their understanding of the causes, working conditions and key inventions of this tumultuous time in history.
We are looking forward to the term ahead.
Grade ten students will be starting their transition plans this term and continuing to build on them over Terms 3 and 4. Transition plans will support your child to plan their future and stay engaged in learning and training. Students will explore the opportunities available after High School. With the support of teachers, they will gain knowledge of destinations for Year 11 and beyond, including industry pathways in traineeships and apprenticeships, college subjects, university and more.
Realising Potential - Food Studies/ Hospitality
Term 1 was a very busy term in the kitchens. Grade 7 students have been working on developing their skills in the kitchen. They have learnt the correct measuring techniques and cooking methods of rubbing in and creaming. Students have made sausage rolls, choc chip muffins, savoury muffins, savoury toast, golden syrup dumplings and pizza. Students have also been learning about kitchen safety and hygiene practises.
Grade 8 students had the challenge of creating a healthy low budget breakfast. They designed and evaluated their recipes with a focus on healthy substitutions. We had a number of breakfast options made from pancakes to acai bowls, smashed avocado and poached eggs. This term we will be focusing on suitability and how farming choices impact our food choices and our budget.
Cooking for teenagers has seen a variety of foods cooked with a focus on foods that can be cooked at home. Our Easter cooking at thee end of Term 1 gave the students a chance to be creative and focus on the presentation of their cupcakes. There were some great designs created with lots of thought and concentration put into the overall look of their cakes.
Hospitality classes have worked hard creating dishes for our canteen as well as the Grade 9 class working on producing food for the Prefect Induction Assembly. The Grade 10 students have learnt how to make coffee using our coffee machine. We had a workshop with Kitty from the Tasmanian Hospitality Association; Kitty taught our students the three Cs of coffee which are cleanliness, consistency and confidence. We all had a turn using the coffee machine and will be having another session with Kitty this term to learn how to make different types of coffee with confidence.
Being new to the school this year I have been very impressed with the students' work ethic and the way they work with each other to get the job done. I have enjoyed getting to know my classes and cook some amazing things with them. I am looking forward to this term and the rest of the year to meet and work with more students.

This Is Us – Youth Art Exhibition
Last year Grade 8 & 9 students worked on artworks expressing emotion for a youth exhibition called “This Is Us” at the Devonport Regional Gallery. They are now on display at the gallery and will be on display until the 28th of May. What an amazing opportunity for our students!
About This Is Us:
Devonport’s local young people responded to the theme of Emotion in the 2022 exhibition – This Is Us. The exhibition gives these talented emerging artists an opportunity to investigate moods, feelings, and relationships within their private, public, and environmental circumstances, through multidisciplinary approaches. The exhibition reveals the depth, and sentiments held by youth in ever-changing times.
