Reporting
The past few weeks have been busy for teachers with report writing dominating their evenings and weekends. Mid-year reports offer an opportunity for staff to share your child’s current assessment and outline their work habits against our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Best Effort and Inclusiveness.
Your child will bring home their report on Wednesday June 22. Attached to the report will be a covering letter outline the reporting process. This is a great chance to talk to your child about the progress they are making at school. There is also a document outlining how you can book appointments with teachers as part of 3-way conferences in week 9. We encourage all families to take advantage of this opportunity to talk with your child’s teachers. Your child’s English/HASS and Maths/Science teacher will be in the same meeting so they can talk about overall work habits. We will have a coffee van at the school on the Tuesday night, so feel free to purchase a coffee while you are here.
Don College have also offered to have two of their staff members present on the Tuesday night to answer any questions about what they can offer students in Grade 11 and 12. This will be a great opportunity for parents, especially if you have a child currently in Grade 10. Bookings with Don Staff will also be made online for 10-minute timeslots.

Years 11 & 12 at Reece High School
At Reece High School, our Grade 10 students have started investigating what 2023 will look like for them. Reece High is working closely with Don College and the Mersey/Leven Collective to make sure that our students are well informed about the course options available to them, so their transition is as smooth as possible. You are most likely aware of the Tasmanian government's plan for extending Grades 11 and 12 into high schools. Currently we have 5 students enrolled in Grade 11 at RHS. For some of our students, the change to Grade 11 can be very challenging. It is with these students in mind, that we are working with Don College, Devonport High School, Latrobe High School, Reece High School, Ulverstone Secondary College and Sheffield School to investigate alternative programs for these students. These programs are personalised to the individual student’s needs and may include study at their high school. Work has begun reviewing student data to identify those students who may need additional support in order to complete Grade 12. The aim is to assist all of our students to complete their Tasmanian Certificate of Education. At present we run a Certificate 1 in Seafood and Aquaculture in year 11/12 at Reece High School along with specific Maths and English courses.
If you feel your child may struggle with the transition to Don College and might benefit from an alternative transition process, please contact Mrs Sarah Elliot (Grade Coordinator) at school on 6420 8100 or alternatively, Miss Amber Loone (AST Year 11 and 12) on 6420 8100.
Below are some web-based resources that would help with subject selection and give parents and students access to information that will be helpful.

Culture at RHS
Over the past few years, we couldn’t have talked more highly about the culture of our school. It is focused on high levels of learning and ensuring we are giving students the opportunity to make more than one year’s growth each year.
The above commitment is reflected through our tight learning processes, especially in relation to providing more time and support in the critical areas of literacy and numeracy. Our intervention program continues to see significant gains in our student data. As families, the greatest way you can continue to support your child is to encourage them to focus on our school values. We know that if they live by these, they will continue to be successful at school.
Grade 10 Exams
Grade 10 exams will begin in week 8 on Monday June 20. This gives the opportunity for our students to develop study techniques and demonstrate their understanding of the work they have done so far this year. Please encourage your child to do their personal best.
3 Way Conferences will be held on Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th June - these will be open to book online from 3pm Wednesday 22nd June to 9am Monday 27th June.
Session Keeper via Schoolzine (SZapp) is aimed to make it easy and efficient for parents/carers to book a 3 way conference appointment. This gives parents/carers greater capacity to choose a meeting time that suits their needs and manage/check their existing booking(s).
Parents will meet their child’s English/HASS and Maths/Science teacher in the same meeting so they can talk about students overall work habits.
An email address is needed to complete bookings online.
Please download the Schoolzine App - Password for Reece High School is 2020 - if you are unsure how to do this please contact the office.
The link below will be available from 3pm Wednesday 22nd June until 9am Monday 27th June to make an appointment.

Instructions will also be sent home with your child's report on Wednesday 22nd June.
The last couple of weeks have been very busy for Grade 7 with lots of different learning taking place in class. Lunch times have been fun with Prefects taking activities every Monday and Wednesday.
Maths:
In Maths we have been exploring how to round, add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals. In Maths Intervention we have been focusing on finding the area and perimeter of 2D shapes and complex shapes.
English:
Over the last few weeks in English, we have been looking at different archetypes. We had to choose a popular protagonist, antagonist or anti-hero and write a PEE paragraph on their characteristics. Deadpool appears to be the most popular antihero. In English Intervention we have been learning how to construct simple, compound and complex sentences. Prefixes, suffixes and spelling patterns have been our main focus in spelling intervention groups.
Science:
In Science we have been growing our knowledge around separation techniques such as evaporation, filtration, crystallisation, paper chromatography and magnetism. We have enjoyed going to the lab and experimenting how to use these separation techniques, especially evaporation because we got to use bunsen burners.
HASS:
Lately in HASS we have learning how to annotate texts to get the most important information from them. We have been intrigued to know who assassinated Julius Caesar. We have had to gather information on different people Caesar worked with to get a better understanding on who we think was behind the attack on Julius Caesar.

Term 2 Science in Year 9
Year 9 students have been busy this term, studying the transfer of heat, light and sound energy. Physics is awesome, as there are so many opportunities for small activities and investigations to demonstrate the theory in hands-on practice!
Of course, we all like to wear a pair of science goggles, a lab coat and look exceptionally thoughtful whenever there is a camera lurking!
Our investigations have led us to confirm that:
- light really does travel faster than sound
- dark objects absorb radiated heat energy much better than light objects
- metals are much better than plastic at transferring heat energy by colliding, vibrating particles
- aspirin, oil and coloured water can model the thermal convection currents found in a lava lamp

Grade 10 students participated in RYDA (Rotary Youth and Driver Awareness) on the 26th of June. This program is designed to inform students of their responsibilities as drivers and the possible dangers that they may face. Students learnt a great deal about safety features of cars, road rules, and the implications different decisions can have while driving. By participating in this program, students can log 5 hours in their learner log books.
Our My Education co-ordinator, Tash, has been busy organising work experience in weeks 9 and 10. Thank you to those students who have returned their forms. Students will find out soon whether they have secured a place for work experience. As you can appreciate, organising work experience is a mammoth task, particularly with the impact of COVID-19 and this limiting some opportunities. While Tash initiates contact with employers, it is ultimately up to students to make further contact with their employer. Some things they could ask are:
- What time do I need to start?
- What time will I finish?
- Where will I need to go?
- What will I need to wear?
- What sorts of things will I be doing?
Tash and the Grade 10 team are happy to support students with preparing themselves for these conversations.
Throughout this term, we have been discussing our purpose as leaders within the school community and how we can expand on our leadership abilities. Through our discussions we have decided that our purpose as leaders is to “aspire to create a supportive community where everyone feels like they belong”. This is the motto that we will be using in order to create our ideas and support our decisions together as a board for the remainder of the year. This is what is motivating us to continue our lunch time activities and making them more regular. As our focus value this term is inclusiveness, we have decided that our aim is to have an increased number of staff and students participate in our activities. To do this, we have made sure that all of our activities are spread across the school to allocate for everyone.
We are continuing to make toasties for Thursday lunch times as the canteen is not open on this day. We have received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback in doing this. The reason we decided to keep doing this is because it aligns with our new motto as prefects.
Towards the end of the term, we are planning to do a whole school activity to raise money and awareness for The Big Freeze (MND). We are aiming to do this during week 10 as a reward for an amazing term. Stay tuned for more details about up coming events!

Cross Country 2022
Tassie turned on the perfect weather for Cross Country running at Kelcey Tier on Thursday. Not too hot and not too cold... for some! The environment provided various terrains to challenge our students including dirt fire trails, dry eucalypt forest, muddy flats and 2 VERY enjoyable hills ? Thank you to all students who participated and a big congratulations to all of our Champions below. We hope you had as much fun as our HPE teachers did.
On the 6th May we had several teams enter the All-Schools Futsal tournament held in Devonport. All teams played well and demonstrated our school values throughout the day. The senior teams fought hard during the round robins with the Grade 9 boys narrowly missing out on winning the final, but the Junior teams went one better with one of our teams taking out the final in penalties! Well done to everyone involved!
Thank-you to the staff and volunteers for making the day possible.
REMINDER- Canteen days are Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
Thursday we offer Subway ordering online as well as toasted sandwiches prepared by the the prefects.
School Nurse News – Inclusiveness & Diversity
In the support hub with Miss Reeves and Darra we have been learning about inclusiveness and diversity. Nurse Lisa has been visiting to help us to learn about different cultures, what some of our differences might be and how to make people feel welcome. We also learnt where some of the food we enjoy comes from and even where some of our favourite sports originated. She even brought us in some Welsh cakes for us to try, yum!
This National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June) we’re challenging all Australians to Be Brave and Make Change, so that we can create a more just, equitable and reconciled Australia.
Change begins with brave actions in your daily life - where you live, work, play and socialise. Take these actions with you every day of the year, not just during National Reconciliation Week.
Gill was in the canteen courtyard at lunchtime last Tuesday with chalk pens for staff and students to write positive and inspiring words of bravery, positivity and growth on the canteen windows in recognition of National Reconciliation Week’s theme this year: Be Brave and Make Change.
In the Hub, we are fortunate to have Dave Gough come and work with us every Wednesday, highlighting Aboriginal Education as well as significant Indigenous calendar dates.
This year we have looked at the documentary series “Stuff everyone should know about Australia”, we’ve carved clap sticks, talked about ochre and its significance, researched the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islands, Australia and Tasmanian flags, we have looked at Tasmanian Rap artist DENNI and her songs and also learnt about Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week.
We visited Tiagarra during Reconciliation Week and have also participated in the whole school activity organised by Gill Brazendale, pictured below.
