It is hard to believe that we are now into November and the end of the year is rapidly approaching. I would like to commend students on the focus that they are showing towards their work and their commitment to ensuring that they get the most out of this valuable learning time. Over the past three weeks, all students have participated in PAT (Progressive Assessment Testing) in Reading, Mathematics, Spelling and Grammar. We are looking forward to celebrating our student growth and also analysing ways in which we can improve our teaching practice in the future.
Transition is a priority in Term 4. This includes Grade 6 students from our Feeder Primary Schools who are visiting us to support their transition to high school and build relationships with key staff who are supporting transition. Similarly, some of our Grade 10 students are also making extra visits to Don College to support their pathway planning and a smooth transition to Year 11. I appreciate the extra work that many staff are doing to support students and meet individual needs.
Growth in Learning Assembly
Last week we held our Growth in Learning Assembly. This is always such a wholesome and feel-good celebration of learning. This assembly is for students who have made growth in their reading through their participation in our Levelled Literacy/Catch Up Literacy programs or in numeracy through our Quicksmart Program. Parents were invited to come along and celebrate their child’s success and share a morning tea. The gratitude from the parents has been really evident. A big thank you to all the staff who helped to make these programs so successful. Their help provides the gift of lifelong skills.
End of Year Events and Celebrations
As the end of the year approaches, I know people will be looking forward to and making plans for end of year events and celebrations. These are wonderful opportunities to recognise achievement and celebrate the learning and growth of our students.
- The Presentation/Colours Assembly will be held on Friday, 15th December at 11:00am and invites will be sent to parents and carers of students who are being recognised on this occasion.
- The Celebration Dinner for Gr 10 is on Wednesday, 20th December. The dinner will follow our usual format for students once they have arrived. We are sure that this will be a very enjoyable and special occasion for students.
- The Grade 10 Assembly, where we farewell Grade 10 students, will be held on Wednesday, 20th December. Arrangements for parents to collect students after the event will be communicated by the Grade 10 team.
- On Tuesday 19th December we will hold our Activities Day where students opt into an activity for the day. More information will be communicated in the next few weeks.
- Thursday 21st December is our final day for students and we will celebrate with our Walkathon/School Picnic at the Bluff. Again, more information will be communicated closer to the date.
We will endeavour to use our social media, SZApp and newsletter to ensure we have lots of details and photos to keep you up to speed and so that you can join in on the celebrations.
A reminder that our Athletics Carnival will be held on the Thursday and Friday of Week 5 (16th and 17th November). A huge amount of effort goes into preparing for this day and I would like to thank our HPE team for their thorough planning and team work to prepare for this event. Carnivals are an important part of our learning program and therefore we have high expectations with regards to student attendance and respectful and positive participation on these days.
Staffing 2024
Mrs Courtney Hizartzidis has won a Quality Teaching Role at Forth Primary School for 2024. Mrs H has taught at Reece High since 2009 and is an experienced leader. We will be sad to see Mrs H go but also very excited to see her leadership journey continue in a different context. Courtney has a wealth of experience and knowledge and the Forth Primary Community will be very lucky in welcoming her to the team.
We will be welcoming Mrs Fiona Heazlewood in 2024 as an Assistant Principal. Mrs Heazlewood is currently a substantive Assistant Principal at Latrobe High School. She has held Assistant Principal and Acting Principal roles at Latrobe High and Parklands High over the past 12 years and brings with her a high level of experience and expertise. We look forward to welcoming Mrs Heazlewood to the Reece High School Community in 2024.
Second Hand Uniform Items
Our Second Hand Uniform supply is currently fairly depleted. If you have any uniform items that are no longer required and are still in a clean and presentable order, we would be very grateful if you could donate these to the office.
Our “Respectful Students of the Week” focus has continued in Grade 8 with lots of students doing an amazing job of upholding our school value of Respect.
The winners for week 3 are:
- 8A Charli
- 8B Angel
- 8C Sienna
- 8D Payton
- 8E Mave
We are also looking forward to Grade 8 camp coming up and ask that students return their camp forms ASAP so we can continue the planning process.
An extended long weekend was just the thing students needed and deserved after their efforts in completing PAT testing in recent weeks. Grade 9 staff were impressed with the level of focus and determination across the cohort and were pleasantly surprised by the desire of so many students requesting immediate feedback on their scores. There have been some pleasing results and once catch-up testing has been completed, we will be able to share some of this information with families.
We would also like to share with you some news in regard to some of our grade 9 students who are achieving success outside of the classroom. Ashton, Tyree and Oliver have all been nominated to participate in an Australian U16 Futsal Team in August next year. We wish the boys luck and congratulate them for being selected and excelling in something they are passionate about.
The prefect process is continuing this term with profile pages going up on the canteen windows next week and nominees filming a short interview that they will show to classes. In addition to this, nominees will run another lunch time activity in week 6, allowing them the opportunity to interact with students across the school. This process will conclude with voting and an official announcement of the ‘2024 Prefect Board’ in week 7. We are proud of the commitment shown by our nominees and, no matter the outcome, we are sure that by taking on this opportunity, every student will have experienced growth in their leadership skills and contributed positively to the school.
In Science, we are wrapping up a new unit on Asexual and Sexual Reproduction, with students learning an overview of asexual versus sexual reproduction, learning about sexual reproduction (with a focus on human reproduction), plant sexual reproduction (involving flowers and pollination). This unit helps students with their general knowledge, it can support job pathways into agriculture and healthcare, and could even enrich personal interests, like cultivating plants. We are entering the revision phase as we prepare for a summative test to finish the unit.
In the coming weeks, students will be completing lesson sequences in most of their core subjects and working through assessment tasks. This is the perfect opportunity to catch up on some study at home and seek feedback where required. We hope to see students giving their ‘Best Effort’ and achieving pleasing results in their final assessments for the year.
As the end of the year rolls around like the waves on the oceans of our lives, it has fallen to these brave writers to update you again on the voyages of our grade ten cohort. As the winds whip up in the stormy term 4 seas, our young sailors are busy battening down the hatches and finalising their tasks. In English, they have been analysing speeches to allow the production of a final speech/sea shanty to perform to the rest of the crew. In History and Social Sciences (HASS), the crew has been using data to investigate the variance in human well-being across several countries. In Mathematics, the students have been studying quadratic functions and their graphs. Science has been focused on physics, allowing them to maximise their upcoming carnival performances. The Guinea girls are well and have been preparing themselves for orientation day (even though they are not going to Don - they didn’t want to be left out!)
As we sail off into the sunset, the Grade Ten Team wishes students all the best for a triumphant finale to the end of the year. Remember that the Celebration Dinner invitations are an ongoing process as students submit their final work and meet their attendance guidelines. Once they have, they will receive their invite to join the good ship Celebration Dinner from Admiral Elliott.
Ayoo me hearties.
Sincerely,
Salty Sea Pirate Richard Robinson and his trusty parrot sidekick, Jesse Connors
